Hola a todos! It has been a while since I wrote something, which means I've been busy and I did a lot of stuff. As you can see in the title, my adventure here is over halway. Damn, time is going creepy fast. I already did a lot of crazy and cool stuff since I'm here and I'll still do some nice things. I ended 2014 in style with a trip to the Ecuadorian Coast with my best YFU friends. The place to be was Manta,  After I took the bus solo from Ibarra, at night, I arrived at 5:30 am and after a 10,5 hour ride in Manta, a big city at the coast in the province of Manabi. The first thing that I can say about the costa/coast/kust is that it's really really reaaaally hot.

We really enjoyed being at the beach and thinking about cold Belgim while chilling in 30 degrees! during our stay, we visited the beach of Manta and the waves there were really big, the ocean had a nice temperature and I got quite brown from all the sun; I was really happy! The next days we visited the beaches of Crucita and Canoa. The easy atmosphere, the nice views and some delicious food, we all had it! You don't need that much in life to be happy! Unfortunately we had to go home so on the 30th of Decembe, after 5 magnificent days we took the bus back to our cities. I had to do crazy stuff as I stood alone in the south terminal from Quito for the buses, on my one. For some reason there were like a few million people in that terminal and also, there were no more buses to my city. Anyway, I found a taxi and a bus and after 13 hours of travelling I was back in Ibarra.

Then it was the 31st. Time to celebrate! We went with the family to a BBQ restaurant and at midnight they have the tradition to brn a paper witch or muñeka. After that I went out with Celene to celebrate New year with the guys from my neighbourhood. The rest of the vacation I didn't do a lot anymore. I made spaghetti, Fanny (a good friend that lives in Manta) was a few days in Atuntaqui (a city close to Ibarra) with her family so we met a few times and before we knew, the vacations were over.

School is still the same. It can be quite boring and waking up at 5:45 am every morning is hard. Really hard. During the first week of school I got robbed after school in the park. Luckily they didn't hurt me and just stole an old Nokia phone. It was a reminder that I still have to be carefull every second of the day, cause Ecuador is different then Belgium. It's difficult to see who are good and who are bad people.

Que mas... (those 2 words are typical here. You use them if the conversation is not going really well for example and you want the other person to say just something) I'm still doing athletics and I'm training really good. I don't know if I can do a competition here but I'll try to be in top form when I go back to Belgium.

In one week I will try to buy my Tomorrowland ticket! I'm going to try to go to one of the biggest and best parties in the world. I will have to wake up at 5am to participate with the belgian presale. That will be fun!

Last week we had a retiro espiritual with school. This was a religious 3 day trip to a small town a bit north of Ibarra. It wasn't really my thing but there were some nice experiences. We went for example to a local family to help them and talk with them. We also went to a school to spend some time with 6 year old ecuadorian kids. An hour before we went back to Ibarra one of my classmates decided to destroy one of the windows of the place where we stayed and that was actually really funny.

I had to compensate those quite sad 3 days so on Saturday we went with some YFU friends to Quito to visit the Mitad del Mundo (the equator) and to party! Again, it was really nice!

Feliz año nuevo 2015!!

Een gelukkig nieuwjaar aan alle lezers van mijn blog! Ik wens jullie allemaal een geweldig 2015 met veel liefde en geluk, een goede gezondheid, dat al jullie dromen mogen uitkomen en vele leuke avonturen! Geniet van alles, en voor wie nog geen goede voornemens heeft: volg mijn blog, dat is goed genoeg! Ik had de afgelopen tijd geen tijd om wist je datjes te schrijven dus die gaan we een maandje overslagen. Ik ben net terug van een paar dagen kust: het was fantastisch!

Aan iedereen een goed begin van 2015, binnenkort komt er nog wel eens een iets uitgebreidere blogpost!

Felices fiestas

Hola a todos. En agosto mi tia me pregunte para escribir un blog en español en esa perioda de Navidad. Entonces voy a escribir algunas cosas sin utilisar Google Translate! 

Primero quería hablar sobre mi familia de aqui. Desde 23 de agosto vivo con la familia Enriquez - Lovato en Pilanqui, Ibarra. Hoy somos el 23 de deciembre entonces son 4 meses! Lo que quiero decir sobre mi familia es que es una familia super chevere y me encanta de vivir con ellos. Es una familia con una grande corazon, una familia muy feliz y me tratan muy bien! Hoy he hecho el pavo por Navidad por ellos. Mañana en la noche vamos a comer el pavo, ojala sale rico! Tambien tengo algunos regalos, por todos, incluyendo el perro Hercules. El Hercules tiene algunos nombres como Bebe, Enano o Herculo y es un perro medio loco!

Otra cosa: desde hoy tengo una semana y media de vacaciones. Mañana vamos a comer pavo y celebrar Navidad, el 25 hay el cumpleaños de Manuel! (Va a tener 50 años!) y despues voy a coger un bus a Manta, una ciudad a la costa. Con algunos amigos de intercambio vamos a viajar y visitar las playas de Ecuador por algunos dias. No puedo esperar para ver ellos, va ser super chevere! 

Bueno voy a traducir todo en holandés ahora.

Para finir quería decir a todos: un feliz Navidad y un próspero año 2015! Esos días me extrañan mucho mis amigos y familia pero voy a disfrutar aquí, ojalá con un pavo muy rico y un viaje a la costa!

Hallo iedereen! In augustus vroeg mijn tante Nicole om een Spaanse blogpost te schrijven, zo rond de kerstperiode. Bij deze ga ik dus een blogpost in het Spaans schrijven zonder Google translate te gebruiken.

Eerst zou ik graag wat zeggen over mijn familie hier. Sinds 23 augustus woon in dus bij de familie Enriquez - Lovato in Pilanqui, Ibarra. Vandaag is het de 23ste december wat betekent dat ik al 4 maanden bij deze familie woon! Wat ik wil zeggen over mijn familie is dat het een heel fijne familie is en dat ik het geweldig vind dat in bij hen kan wonen voor 10 maanden. Het is een familie met een heel groot hart, een hele gelukkige familie en ze behandel mij heel goed! Vandaag heb ik de kalkoen voor hen voorbereid. Morgenavond gaan we ze dan eten, hopelijk is ze lekker! Ook heb ik enkele cadeautjes voor iedereen, inclusief de hond Hercules. Hercules heeft nog enkele bijnamen zoals baby, dwerg of Her-kont en het is een beetje een gekke hond.

Iets anders: sinds vandaag heb ik anderhalve week vakantie. Morgen gaan we kalkoen eten en Kerst vieren, de 25ste is het de 50ste verjaardag van Manuel. Daarna ga ik de bus nemen naar Manta, een stad aan de kust. Met enkele uitwisselingsvrienden gaan we wat reizenen de Ecuadoriaanse kust bezoeken voor enkele dagen. Ik kan echt niet wachten om hen te zien, ik ben er heel zeker van dat het plezant gaat worden!

Om te eindigen zou ik iedereen heel graag een fijne Kerstmis en e gelukkig nieuwjaar 2015 willen wensen! Deze dagen mis ik mijn Belgische vrienden en familie echt wel hard maar ik ga hier zeker veel plezier maken, hopelijk met een lekkere kalkoen en een fantastische trip naar de kust.

Hola a todos, it has been a while since I had some time. This is a lazy Sunday afternoon so finally I can write another blogpost. The last weeks have been busy and some interesting things happened. My friend Boen came for a weekend to Ibarra, I went to Quito with my best friends (some YFU people) and last but not least: I'm an adult now.

When Boen (also from YFU Flanders, a great friend that lives in Quito) came, we did some nice one day trips. On Saturday we went to Otavalo for the market cause this market is just too awesome. In the afternoon we met with Kathleen and Jana to make a delicious spaghetti. We made so much that we had leftovers for 2 days. During the night we chilled with friends from my school. On Sunday we slept quite long. So in the afternoon we did a small trip to Cotacachi, a town next to a nice volcano. In the town there wasn't a lot so we discovered some nice nature: we took a taxi to Cuicocha (caviameer / guinea pig lake). On Monday he went back to Quito, the city I went to explore a few days later.

 Indeed, after 3 months and a half it was time to explore the capital and second biggest city of this country: Quito. This city is located between the mountains and it really is a very very very very big city. The best things in the city to my opinion are the historical centre and the new, modern centre. For exaple, the whole south of Quito is very dangerous, same as the upper north. We have a very nice group of YFU friends and it was really cool to see them all again. We visited lots of nice things like Quicentro, El Panecillo, the Centro Historico and the Telefrico. To bad there were lot's of clouds for the Telefrico, a telefrique that takes you to the top of a mountain (till 4100m) and then you have this epic view over Quito and you can also see how huge it is. The parents of Noë also went to a typical restaurant with us and invited us to eat cuy/ guinea pig. It's not bad but I like the chicken wraps from KFC more. 2 very nice weekends and we're already making plans to do another trip in the holidays that are coming.

The last weeks we had juegos internos at school. This means we played basket and soccer against the other classes. My classmates didn't let me play often cause for them winning is more important than having fun and I think they didn't had much confidence in me. Most of the people in my class are really childish and they can be really iritating. Luckily almost everyone in my school knows my name and that I'm the 'gringo from Belgium' and they are nice to me.

Christmas is also coming! People started to decorate things since half November and since last week we also have a Christmas tree. I have to say that a lot of this things have a high level of kitsch. Actually I'm not really in the mood cause it's still like 25 degrees the whole time BUT my family probably wants me to make stuffed turkey Hove-style (like the famous version of my grandmother).

Last week Thursday I had my 18th birthday! WOOOOOHOOOW I'm an adult now. At school they surprised me with cake and they sang 'feliz cumpleaños'. Then they putted my face into the cake of course. After school I skyped with my parents and in the evening my lovely ecuadorian parents invited some people and we ate something, played games and they sang for me. We ate cake and there was also a package from Belgium with some movies and lots of cards from my family and friends. That made me really happy! My friends from school also slapped me with a leather belt, 18 times, and it was really painfull. Gotta love the ecuadorian traditions! Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes and the nice package you guys are great!

Wist je dat... Part III

Geachte lezer, 

de maand november is aan zijn einde gekomen en op deze mooie zonnige dag heb ik dan maar besloten om nog eens wat wist-je-datjes neer te schrijven. 

Vandaag is niet alleen een zonnige dag met een graad of 25, vandaag ben ik ook exact 100 dagen hier! Fkzkfkfjxjdjfxjskgkg  voor de geïnteresseerden, ik zal nog 209 dagen vertoeven in dit prachtige evenaarsland! Ik heb ook geleerd uit mijn blogfouten en ik heb enkele volgens mij hele interessante wist-je-datjes neergepend wat maakt dat ik ze nu nog altijd weet dus hier gaan we dan!

Wist je dat...

Ik vorige maand een heel interessant wist-je-datje ben vergeten? In oktober was er namelijk een aardbeving met een kracht van 4 op schaal van richter in Ibarra! Een hele ervaring, als je hele omgeving ineens begint te bewegen, wetende dat je perfect nuchter bent... Gelukkig waren er geen erge gevolgen.

Er nog altijd 2 keer rijst per dag op het menu staat? Ik kreeg de opmerking 'gij woont precies in Azie' maar neen, hier in Ecuador zijn er namelijk ook heel veel rijstplantages. 

Je in Ecuador 24 bananen voor het geweldig grote bedrag van 1$ kunt kopen? Je kan dit land ook wel de bananenrepubliek noemen maar zowat alle soorten fruit zijn hier spotgoedkoop.

Het Ecuadoriaanse verkeer vrij tot zeer gek is? Voorrang van rechts bijvoorbeeld wordt niet echt veel toegepast. Ook het gebruik van verkeerslichten is een ander verhaal. Groen betekent dat je het wel kan wagen om over te steken, oranje is net zoals in heel de wereld 'gas geven/heel snel lopen' en rood is hier niet meer dan een indicatie dat er auto's kunnen aankomen.

Mijn gastzus Celene aan het leren rijden is? Elke keer als we in de auto zitten zegt ze 'we gaan sterven' (als zij aan het stuur zit). Ook kan ze het niet echt verdragen als mijn gastmama tips geeft. Ik persoonlijk heb al wel enkele stressmomentjes gehad toen ze aan het rijden was. Een vrouw achter het stuur is bloed... (Hier kan u als lezer zelf iets aanvullen als je wilt) 

Mijn geweldige gastouders vorige week 25 jaar getrouwd waren? Ik persoonlijk vond het een hele eer om dat te mogen meemaken! Zij zijn een voorbeeld van een mooie familie die met niet al te veel heel gelukkig kunnen zijn! Je mag er zeker van zijn dat ik ze verwend heb met lekker eten en cadeautjes!

De kerstversiering in Ibarra sinds half november aanwezig is in vele huizen, supermarkten etc.? Ze zijn hier echt verslaafd aan de meest lelijke kitsch toestanden! Het zal een ervaring worden, een kerstboom in huis terwijl het 25 graden is!

Het in de Ecuadoriaanse jungle heel warm en vochtig is?

We in de jungle een zoo zijn gaan bezoeken en onder andere een anaconda hebben gezien? In het wild hebben we buiten een spin niet echt iets gezien, buiten heel veel muggen die verzot waren van bloed van buitenlanders/ gringos.

Er de komende weken weer leuke tripjes zitten aan te komen? Dit weekend komen Jana en Boen (2 Vlaamse yfu-ers) naar Ibarra en volgende week zijn er de Fiestas de Quito en ga ik voor enkele dagen naar Quito.

Ups and downs - literally

Hola a todos, it has been some time sice I wrote a blogpost which is actually good cause that means I'm doing lots of crazy and nice things here!

So first of all let me explain the tittle. In the past two weeks and a half I visited some places. I went from Ibarra (2200m) to Latacunga (2800m) to visit my friend Ben. After that I went back to Ibarra for one day, cause of course there was also the amazing Jungle trip with YFU. So we took the bus from Ibarra to Quito (2500m) and then to the Jungle/Oriente/Amazonas (300m). I thought it could be an original tittle and now everyone knows there are lots of different altitudes in Ecuador.

Ok let's start on Fridaymorning October 31. I took the bus for a 5 hour ride to Latacunga, a city about 70 km south of Quito. My hostmother told me that it is very cold there so I took enough clothes with me, even enough to go for one month to the North Pole. But as I could expect, it was a good temperature there and the sun was shining... First we went to Ben's place. After that we went to the mall cause we wanted to make Hamburgers with French Fries. Ecuadorians are really bad in making fries, and of course ours were quite good (eventhough we almost destroyed the kitchen fire) and the hamburgers... mi dios! The next day we went with Ben's family to Lago Quilotoa, this used to be a volcano but now there is a lake in the crater. It was a long drive with the car and we went to an altitude of almost 4000m. At the lake we did a small walk and we took a lot of pictures, cause it was a beautifull place. On our way back, the daughter of Ben's hostsister puked in the car. She was sitting in the trunk and they had given her so much junkfood, so it was actually really afwul but the whole situation was also a little bit hilarious... she even puked on Ben's other hostsister. When we were back home we... coocked. Pasta. So. Awesome. After that we saw a movie. On Sunday we did a 'citytrip Latacunga'. We walked in the city and discovered the river that goes through the city. We went to a pizzeria to eat pizza of course. We played some soccer and we want to the mall again to buy ingredients for french toast, it was the best french toast in my whole life!!!  Normally we would go to the Cotopaxi volcano on Monday. This is the second biggest mountain/volcano in Ecuador (5900m) but we slept quite long and there were also some misunderstandings with Ben's hostmother so we went with the whole family to a market. They sold lots of authentic stuff but I just bought two pairs of sunglasses for 8 Dollar. Of course we also coocked that night and of course we made pasta. On Tuesday I went back to Ibarra for another 5 hour bus ride, which is actually quite nice cause you can see alot of the country.

Then it was Wednesday the 5th of November which meant JUNGLE TRIP!!! Firts I had to go to school and wow, I was checking the hour every 5 minutes! At 1pm I ran home, took a shower, ate lunch and of we were! First we took the bus to Quito with the people of Ibarra and then a taxi to the Hostal de la Reina in Quito. It was really cool to see everyone again. Lots of languages were spoken and everyone was excited to go to the Jungle. We had dinner in McDonnald's, damn that was good! The next day we had a 6 hour bus ride to Rio Napo. From Quito all the way through the mountains, passed Tena and then we could go on a cano to our awesome hotel named Casa del Suizo. It was raining and it was also really hot! I was on the room with Ben (USA) and Ville from Sweden. The room had an epic view over the jungle, we had a hammock (hangmat) and I had a huge bed, it was actually big enough for me! The buffet was also good! So much good food hehe. In the afternoon, nothing was planned so we just chilled at the swimmingpool. The next few days we did a walk in the jungle, we went on a raft on the river, we visited a Kitchoa family and a local village, visited a zoo owned by foreign people that was made for crazy animals like anacondas, monkeys, birds etc. that used to be pets and we chilled a lot at the pool. It was really nice. On the last night we lit a candle for Helena, the german girl that died in October. Too bad, we had to go back to Quito on Sunday. Another 6 hour bus ride. Back in Quito we just hanged in and around the hotel and on Monday everyone had to go home.

That was the story of the first YFU trip and my trip to Latacunga! Luckily 3 other trips are coming. I can't wait for the Coast trip inJanuary and of course the FIESTAS de Quito in December!

Wist-je-datjes part II

Einde van de maand oktober dus het is weer tijd voor wist-je-datjes!!! Kei mega super interessant dus!! Ik ga heel eerlijk zijn, ik heb niet echt iets opgeschreven of zo dus ik ga gewoon op dit moment wat weetjes bedenken. Here we go!

Wist je dat ...

Het mijn 70ste dag is hier in Ecuador?

Mijn iPod terug werkt? Echt super! Gewoon een update gedaan en 't was terug perfect tiptop in orde!

Ik enorme bergen rijst verzet? Het blijft smaken en het is het belangrijkste deel van de maaltijd dus eten die handel!

Ik dit weekend een citytrip naar Latacunga ga doen? Ik ga mijn YFU-vriend Ben opzoeken. Latacunga is een stad dat gelegen is op ongeveer 100 km ten zuiden van Quito, op 2800 meter hoogte!

Ik volgende week woensdag vertrek naar de Jungle met YFU voor 5 dagen? Iedereen kijkt er keihard naar uit (ik ook), dus er komen een paar tripjes aan de komende weken!

Ik begin te merken dat mijn Nederlands een beetje achteruit aan het gaan is? Ik begin woorden te vergeten en zinnen vormen gaat ook al iets moeilijker...

Iemand mij gisteren vroeg of Thaïland in Europa ligt?

We met 4 Belgen in Ibarra zitten? Buiten Clementine en ik van YFU zijn er ook nog Daniel en Alice van Rotary!

De frietjes hier echt niet te eten zijn? Als Geomara verse frietjes maakt worden ze slechts 1 keer gefrituurd in veel te weinig vet , en dan warm gehouden in de pan met nog wat olie wat maakt dat ze heel vettig en wak zijn.

Het heel normaal is hier om brood, rijst en aardappelen te eten in 1 maaltijd? Het is al gebeurd dat er Pasta, aardappelen, rijst en brood in 1 maaltijd verwerkt waren!

We waarschijnlijk een van de komende dagen een auto gaan kopen? Gewoon, omdat het kan.

Ik geen inspiratie heb op dit moment en Manuel de laptop nodig heeft dus ik ga afronden?

Ik dus ga afronden...

Ik jullie even jaloers zal maken met het weer: Het zas hier vandaag een aangename 23 graden en afwisselend wolken en zon.

Ik er binnen een maand ben met meer weer en meer wist-je-datjes?

Ik na de Jungle trip nog wel eens een blogpost zal schrijven?

There will always be rice - rijst is een zekerheid

Hola a todos! Time is going fast and in 2 weeks and a half I will be chasing spiders and snakes in the JUNGLE! But now I'm just chilling in Ibarra so I can write another post! 

Now, what happened the last few weeks... I ate guinea pig (cuy in spanish and cavia in dutch) for dinner! This may sound a bit cruel but some of you will know that I practically eat everything and it's a typical ecuadorian dish so yes I ate it. And actually it tasted quite good! I think it tastes a bit like very juicy chicken. On the 4th of October I think, it was the last weekend  of the Fiestas de Ibarra. There was a huge hors race called 'Caceria del Zorro'. The horses made a big tour and the finnish was located at the lake of Ibarra, called 'Yahuarcocha'. I went to the lake with Celene and her friends and it was really nice! We didn't see a lot of the race cause there were lots of people but it was just nice to be there. After that we went back to the centre of Ibarra and it seemed like the whole population of Ibarra was outside! So we just met some friends and stayed outside for a while. The whole atmosphere was so nice and there really is a big difference with the Fiestas de Ibarra and for example the village party and 'kermis' in my village in Belgium! 

Then there is school. After one month and a half of school I can tell you that there is a big difference between La Salle, my school here and Sint-Rita, my previous school in Belgium. The school system is really different and I'm goint to be very honnest with you: to my opinion, the belgian system is much better. I have to admit that I'm sometimes getting really bored during for example math classes when we're making exercices that I did 2 years ago. Also English classes are a real joke. Sometimes we just watch 'The Simpsoms' or videos on Youtube. Also I really hate gym classes cause the teacher is just an amateur who's wearing fake Adidas clothes and he says things like 'You really can't drink water while you're doing sports or you'll throw up immediatley'... Also the guys of my class can be so childish omg. But of course we also make fun and laugh so school is still ok. 

One week ago, Ben came. He's an American YFU-student and a good friend! He lives in Latacunga, about 3 hours south of Quito. So he came to our house for 4 days and it was really great to see him again. On Friday we did a tour in Ibarra and we ate a delicious ice cream (Ibarra is actually really known for it's good ice creams) and at night we prepared a mac'n cheese for the whole family, and also Kathleen and Clementine came. It was really delicious! I also shared some of my belgian chocolate with them just so they would know that our chocolate is the best in the world. 

On Saturday we went to Otavalo with Monika (from Germany) and Kathleen (from Canada). Otavalo is a bit smaller than Ibarra and it's located at the other side of the Imbabura mountain. This city is known for its market where they sell clothes made from alpaca wool, ponchos, dreamcatchers and lot's of stuff made by indigenous people so no fake made in China stuff. I bought a poncho, an alpaca wool sweater and a dreamcatcher and we defenietly have to go back to buy lots of souvenirs. after that we went home and Ben and I saw the New Kids movies. On Sunday we just did some chillings, talked a bit, we saw some movies and Monday early in the morning Ben went back home. 

Last week our dog was sick. Hercules is now more friendly to me compared to the first weeks here (probably because I give him coockies with dulce de leche and I teach him walking backwards on two feet) and it was so sad to see him suffering but we went to the doctor and now he's better. He needed an injection and for that the doctor had to shave his leg. He has quite a lot of hair so now he has one very small leg and three legs with just lots of hair lol.

Also we got to know that there are people from Rotary in Ibarra! I think they are 8 and 2 of them are from Belgium. There are some differences between Rotary and YFU but they are nice people! Last Monday we went to the house from one of them to watch Bosnia- Belgium. And they also have a Playstation so of course we played some FIFA. 

Now, why did I chose this tittle? Well, it has a meaning! Cause I'm having a great time here but you never know when something will happen or not. But after almost 2 moths here, there is one thing where you can always count on. The Rice! Just because it's on our plate, mostly twice a day, 7/7, 365/365. 

I'm currently writing on Celene's laptop and I think it will take lots of time to upload some pictures but this is the link of Ben's blog and there are lots of pictures on his blog so check it out I would say!

Hoihoi iedereen! Ik heb zowat alles gezegd dat ik wou zeggen. Als jullie nog iets willen weten, twijfel niet! De volgende blogpost zullen de wist- je- datjes zijn in het Nederlands! En zoals  jullie kunnen zien in de titel: rijst zal er altijd zijn. Inderdaad, mijn iPod heeft het laten afweten, soms is er voor een paar uurtjes geen water in huis en soms regent het hier zelfs, maar rijst? Dat is er al-tijd!

On this day, exactly 20 years ago, my (belgian) parents married! This means that it is their 20th wedding anniversary today! On this moment they are on a holiday in Turkey for one week (they also did their honeymoon in Turkey) and next week they will do a citytrip to Vienna. So, this is a very special day for our family and special days diserve a blogpost! For me, they are the two most important people in my life and I'm so happy for them! Of course I hope lots of years will follow! I'm thinking a lot about them today and I heard they have a great time in Turkey!

Liefste mama en papa, heel hard gefeliciteerd met jullie 20ste huwelijksverjaardag! Jullie hebben de felicitaties van mij, mijn gastgezin en van de mensen van YFU! Ik wens jullie nog heel veel plezier in Turkije en volgende week in Wenen! Champagne hebben ze hier niet echt maar ik drink zeker een glaasje van de lokale fruitsap op jullie! 

Jullie zijn geweldig! 

Ook mijn nichtje Elise (19) en meter Eva (41) hadden hun verjaardag de voorbije week. Een hele gelukkige verjaardag, of feliz cumpleaños zoals ze hier zeggen!

Een verschrikkelijke dag...

Beste lezers van deze blog, deze blogpost is er één die ik helemaal niet gepland had maar als uitwisselingsstudent vind ik dat ik deze toch moest schrijven. Een uitwisseling is iets heel moois. Maar in elk avontuur zitten meestal ook minder mooie momenten. Soms zijn het kleine dingen, soms zijn het dingen die een mens heel stil maakt en doet vloeken over hoe verschrikkelijk sommige dingen zijn. 

Deze dag begon zoals elke dag, met school, dan de training maar daarna werd deze dag overschaduwd door 2 verschrikkelijke dingen.

Vandaag kregen we te horen dat een mede YFU-studenten hier in Ecuador is overleden... Het gaat om een Duits meisje die in Portoviejo zat. Elena Haasen had net zoals alle andere uitwisselingsstudenten het geweldige idee om op uitwisseling te gaan. Helaas werd ze redelijk snel ziek hier. Ze had problemen met het eten en had veel koorts. Er werd besloten om haar naar een ziekenhuis in Quito te brengen en daar werd vastgesteld dat ze leukemie had. Ook had ze een probleem met haar longen waardoor ze amper nog kon ademen. Op 1 oktober is ze overleden. Haar moeder was hier toen ze is overleden en na het lezen van haar blog kan ik alleen maar zeggen dat Helena een bron van optimisme was waar iedereen van kan leren. Ze bleef positief in hele moeilijke tijden maar het lot besliste er anders over. Alle studenten hier zijn er kapot van. En hoe een droom in een nachtmerrie kan veranderen... Ik wens haar familie en vrienden uiteraard heel veel sterkte...

Ook vanuit Denemarken kreeg ik vandaag heel slecht nieuws. De gastpapa van Justine, een YFU studente uit Vlaanderen, is helaas overleden. Justine is een fantastische persoon en het was fantastisch om haar te leren kennen op de orientatieweekends in Belgie. Ook dit maakte mij volledig stil... Ik wens Justine en haar gastgezin enorm veel sterkte. 

Een uitwisseling is zoals jullie kunnen zien dus een verhaal met mooie en minder mooie kanten. Dit is een hele lelijke dag met iets te veel slecht nieuws naar mijn goesting! Ik hoop dat alles snel beter zal evolueren! Zoals ik al zei, dit is een zwarte dag voor alle studenten hier maar we zullen dit verwerken en daarna terug met een positieve blik verder gaan!
