Here we go!
Wist je dat ...
Het mijn 70ste dag is hier in Ecuador?
Mijn iPod terug werkt? Echt super!
Iemand mij gisteren vroeg of Thaïland in Europa ligt?
Chao! Un Abrazo

There will always be rice - rijst is een zekerheid
Hola a todos! Time is going fast and in 2 weeks and a half I will be chasing spiders and snakes in the JUNGLE! But now I'm just chilling in Ibarra so I can write another post!
Now, what happened the last few weeks... I ate guinea pig (cuy in spanish and cavia in dutch) for dinner! This may sound a bit cruel but some of you will know that I practically eat everything and it's a typical ecuadorian dish so yes I ate it. And actually it tasted quite good! I think it tastes a bit like very juicy chicken. On the 4th of October I think, it was the last weekend of the Fiestas de Ibarra. There was a huge hors race called 'Caceria del Zorro'. The horses made a big tour and the finnish was located at the lake of Ibarra, called 'Yahuarcocha'. I went to the lake with Celene and her friends and it was really nice! We didn't see a lot of the race cause there were lots of people but it was just nice to be there. After that we went back to the centre of Ibarra and it seemed like the whole population of Ibarra was outside! So we just met some friends and stayed outside for a while. The whole atmosphere was so nice and there really is a big difference with the Fiestas de Ibarra and for example the village party and 'kermis' in my village in Belgium!
Then there is school. After one month and a half of school I can tell you that there is a big difference between La Salle, my school here and Sint-Rita, my previous school in Belgium. The school system is really different and I'm goint to be very honnest with you: to my opinion, the belgian system is much better. I have to admit that I'm sometimes getting really bored during for example math classes when we're making exercices that I did 2 years ago. Also English classes are a real joke. Sometimes we just watch 'The Simpsoms' or videos on Youtube. Also I really hate gym classes cause the teacher is just an amateur who's wearing fake Adidas clothes and he says things like 'You really can't drink water while you're doing sports or you'll throw up immediatley'... Also the guys of my class can be so childish omg. But of course we also make fun and laugh so school is still ok.
One week ago, Ben came. He's an American YFU-student and a good friend! He lives in Latacunga, about 3 hours south of Quito. So he came to our house for 4 days and it was really great to see him again. On Friday we did a tour in Ibarra and we ate a delicious ice cream (Ibarra is actually really known for it's good ice creams) and at night we prepared a mac'n cheese for the whole family, and also Kathleen and Clementine came. It was really delicious! I also shared some of my belgian chocolate with them just so they would know that our chocolate is the best in the world.
On Saturday we went to Otavalo with Monika (from Germany) and Kathleen (from Canada). Otavalo is a bit smaller than Ibarra and it's located at the other side of the Imbabura mountain. This city is known for its market where they sell clothes made from alpaca wool, ponchos, dreamcatchers and lot's of stuff made by indigenous people so no fake made in China stuff. I bought a poncho, an alpaca wool sweater and a dreamcatcher and we defenietly have to go back to buy lots of souvenirs. after that we went home and Ben and I saw the New Kids movies. On Sunday we just did some chillings, talked a bit, we saw some movies and Monday early in the morning Ben went back home.
Last week our dog was sick. Hercules is now more friendly to me compared to the first weeks here (probably because I give him coockies with dulce de leche and I teach him walking backwards on two feet) and it was so sad to see him suffering but we went to the doctor and now he's better. He needed an injection and for that the doctor had to shave his leg. He has quite a lot of hair so now he has one very small leg and three legs with just lots of hair lol.
Also we got to know that there are people from Rotary in Ibarra! I think they are 8 and 2 of them are from Belgium. There are some differences between Rotary and YFU but they are nice people! Last Monday we went to the house from one of them to watch Bosnia- Belgium. And they also have a Playstation so of course we played some FIFA.
Now, why did I chose this tittle? Well, it has a meaning! Cause I'm having a great time here but you never know when something will happen or not. But after almost 2 moths here, there is one thing where you can always count on. The Rice! Just because it's on our plate, mostly twice a day, 7/7, 365/365.
I'm currently writing on Celene's laptop and I think it will take lots of time to upload some pictures but this is the link of Ben's blog and there are lots of pictures on his blog so check it out I would say!

Hoihoi iedereen!

Wist-je-datjes part I

Ibarra, my home
Hello dearest readers! Another two weeks passed and that makes that I'm officially here for 1 month and 1 day! All the exchange students have the same opinion I think: time flies. First of all this awesome news: you remember the previous blogpost where I said that I was looking for an athletics club? I FOUND ONE!! Yes, from now on I will have training 4 times a week in the Estadio Olimpico de Ibarra. And just because athletics is my biggest passion and I'm practising it for already 11 years, I was so happy. It was nice to meet other people who have the same passion as me and the good thing is that I do a lot of sports now so I can actually eat what I want without getting fat. Also, the ecuadorian champion on the 100 meters is in the same group as me, he says his personal best is 10'12 seconds, which is really really fast.
The athletics track
So, we have school, the athletics, and I'm here for one month. This will probably be my life for the next 9 months. Yes, I have the feeling that I'm settled down here, in this beatifull city. This is how a 'normal' week here looks like:
On Monday, I wake up at 5.35am (like every other day in the week). I eat, I get on my uniform (on Monday it's a suit) and then I have to catch my bus at 6.25am. On Monday we have a ceremony at school, and all the students have to sing the national anthem (except of Kathleen, the other YFU student at my school, and me because we aren't ecuadorians). Then classes start, at 7am. We have 8 or 9 classes from 40 minutes every day, with one break at 11am. Then I'm always hungry so I eat something in the cafetaria. At 1pm or 1.40pm, classes end and then I go home. Kathleen and I agree: the school system is defenietly not perfect. There should be more breaks and sometimes the teacher just arrives 20 minutes late in the class. Sometimes they also just talk about random things that have nothing to do with the subject of the lesson. Although, every day I understand more and more of the lessons. When I come home, I eat (rice and chicken most of the time), I do some laundry or just listen some music and at 4pm I have athletics training till 6pm. On Monday and Friday we do sprint training, on Tuesday and Thursday we have power training. On Wednesday I usually do a siesta. When I'm home, I take or a cold shower or a really hot shower because the shower doesn't work that perfect. Then I do homework if we have homework and then we eat (rice most of the time). After that we watch some tv with the family and then they go upstairs and I go to my room. Actually all the days in the week are the same, except of the uniform I have to wear for school: on Thursday we have gym classes so we wear sports clothes and on the other days a jeans with a polo of the school and a jacket of the school.
Also the university of Priscilla started. The university is in Quito so mostly of the time we're 4 now. Celene still has vacation. In the weekend, I try to do as much as possible. My hostmother works on Saturday and they also really like siestas. Yesterday for example, we went to the cinema. For the first time in my life I saw a movie in 3D. It was also in spanish and without subtitles. Then you have for example the moment that everybody was laughing except of me cause I didn't understand the joke lol. It are also Fiestas de Ibarra now, I don't really know what will happen but on Friday night there were just lots of people in the park. I went out with Celene and her friends. I already saw these guys a few times, and they're all really nice. One week ago we went with some friends of my class to someone's house and we ate a huge pizza.
Me with Pablo, we're the two tallest guys in our school.
Because my hostparents went to Quito last week to sell their appartment there, I made spaghetti for myself and Celene. It tasted pretty good, just because it was no rice! We also made empañadas once and yesterday we went to a restaurant were we basically ate lots of meat.
That's about it. I'm really happy with my life here, and time really flies. Muchas gracias for reading!!

Here in Ibarra, everything is fine. My family is doing their siesta, so it's time for another blogpost! After we came back from Quito, we didn't do much. I still had one week of vacation, and in that week I ate a lot of rice and chicken (what I actually eat twice a day), we saw some movies and I tried do talk as much as possible with my hostfamily. I went to my first party, with my hostsister Celene and her friends. We drove to Otavalo, a small town not far away from here. The party was quite different then parties in Belgium. Everybody danced in couples and the music is... Yeah, latinomusic. To give you an idea of what the music is like, this song is called 'de donde vengo' and I heard it first on the orientation in Quito. I really like it!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=58B9KznOc6E
I also went to the park to play some football with Celene and her friends. I'm not as good as Lukaku or Mertens, but it was really nice! Although, because of the altitude (Ibarra is at 2300 m), it felt like running 1000 km. The next day, we went to the house of one of these guys to make pizza, which tasted really good after all the rice.
Sometimes, we also eat other things then rice. For example, last week, we ate taco's, also when we see a movie my mother makes popcorn 😝, I learned how to make 'jugo' (fruit juice) and my sister Prixi made a cake. The cake was really good but without telling me, they used all my Speculoos and white chocolate and one bar of Côte d'or milk chocolate with nuts for the cake. I think they don't realise yet how valuable and delicious that chocolate is. Luckily I just gave them 5 of the 17 bars of chocolate that I have brought with me, the rest is safely hidden in my room!
One week ago we went to the market. That was quite crazy. They actually sell everything there. Even the head of a cow, which was quite nasty! Because my family likes movies and I want to improve my spanish, I bought 12 movies for 3$. Of course all the movies are dubbed in spanish and I also have my doubts wether it are legal copies, but you know, it was too cheap to not buy them.
Then there is also our dog, Hercules. Sometimes I like him, sometimes I don't because he stinks and he tries to bite me from time to time. One of his favourite toys is a Barbie, sometimes he wears shoes and he eats everything, from rice with chicken to popcorn and even my belgian chocolate (I thought dogs died if they eat chocolate). Sometimes he runs through the house which is hilarious.
On Sunday, we went to the local church. This isn't really a church, it's like a hangar that they use as a church. But actually I am what they call an atheïst, so going to church every week will be... Not the coolest activity during the week. I didn't understand a lot of it. We sang, prayed and from time to time the priest started screaming. Don't ask me why.
Because my family actually sleeps a lot during the afternoon, I don't do much during the day. I hope they will become a bit more active in the near future. I visited the two malls here in Ibarra, called 'La Plaza' and 'Laguna Mall', together with the other exchange students and another time we also went to the centre of Ibarra and just walked a bit. It's a really nice and beatifull city because it's surrounded by all the mountains!
This is the Imbabura. It's the coolest mountain in the neighbourhood! One day I'll climb it together with another exchange student and her hostbrother!
When we (Clementine from Wallonia, Kathleen from Canada and me) went to the 'La Plaza', we bought a coconut. It wasn't that good as we expected lol.
Today we saw a 'famous' Ecuadorian football player in the mall, called Augustin Delgado. He played for the national team but now he retired. Because we are exchange students and we are a mixture of tourists and 'gringo's' that live here, we just asked if we could take a picture with him.
If you are still reading, thanks! If you can't speak dutch and you want to learn it, keep on reading!
Winst! In ons jaar zitten ongeveer 50 leerlingen, verdeeld over 2 klassen.
Thanks for reading!
maandag 25 augustus 2014
Hola de Ecuador
Here I am, in Ecuador, and everything is all right with me! So, let's start from the beginning. At Wednesday the 20th I woke up very early to go to the airport. (The night before, my friends and family came to say goodbye, which was really nice! Thanks guys) as we were quite early at the airport and we had to wait for Noë and Jana, I could think about wether I didn't forget anything. As I'm here for almost 1 week, I think I didn't forget anything. YES!! Saying goodbye to my parents wasn't easy. After we checked in and did all the controll stuff, I went to a Belgian toilet for the last time. This was probably the last time that I could throw the toilet paper in the toilet, cause here we have to throw it in a bin. Then, we boarded the plane for a 30 min. flight from Brussels to Amsterdam. There, we didn't have much time but we managed to board our big plane on time. As we boarded the plane, we already met some people of YFU Finland. Then we took off for a 11 hour flight to Quito. I had a weird feeling during take off, because at that point, we were really gone to Ecuador for 10 months. The flight went good. I saw some movies, ate really good plane food and we also searched other students from YFU (and we found some!). After 11 hours and a beautiful approach we landed in Quito. And omg, this is such a big city! It is located on an altitude of 2500 meters (between the mountains) and someone told me that Quito has a 'length' of 70 km. Luckily, my (almost) 60 kg of luggage also arrived.
Some YFU volunteers were waiting for us and then we left to our orientation camp in Quito. This was in a place of the local church community. We arrived first and I was the only boy so I had a room for myself. Later on that night, some other people arrived (including 3 girls of Wallonia and an Estonian guy so I wasn't the only guy). Because we were all tired, we didn't do anything. As dinner we had pasta with... Rice! Then, during the night, actually something very cool happened: we had an earthquake. It had a scale of 3.1 one and nobody felt it! What a crazy experience. Also during the night, the rest of the students arrived. We were now four in our room: me, Andreas from Estonia, Vilhelm from Sweden and Ben(jamin) from the USA. All very nice guys!! Well, actually not everyone arrived. There are 47 students that go to Ecuador and 24 of them are from Germany. Guess what, they flew from Frankfurt via Miami to Quito but because of some weather problems in Miami, they missed their plane to Quito and had to wait for 17 hours. This is actually not so funny but you have to confess, somehow it's funny to laugh with the misery of someone else ;). So actually we, the non-Germans were already a close group and then there was an invation of Germans. During the orientation, the volunteers prepared us for this year and they always talked about 'crazy Ecuadorians'. At noon, we played some football and 'ecuabolli' (the national sport, looks like volleyball) and at night, they tried to teach us how to dance. It's not easy but I hope to become a pro in it! The second day we went to some place for some visa stuff, which basically ment we had to wait a lot. Also Felipe, one of the volunteers, had his birthday. And here in Ecuador, there are 2 'rituals' when it's your birthday: you have to bite from a cake and then they'll put your face into it, and they slap you with a leather belt, so for example when you become 18, they slap you 18 times. Can't wait for my birthday! We also went to a very nice and new shopping hall, and I drunk a very good and cheap mango smoothie. Oh, everything is so cheap here. For example, a ride with the bus costs 0,25$, that's no money for some good transport. Taxi costs 1$, very expensive don't you think? On the 23rd we went to Ibarra (me, a Canadian girl, two German girls and a girl from Wallonia). They said that the ride to Ibarra would take 1,5 hour and for example, students that are going to the coast, had to sit on the bus for 10 hours, so students who didn't went to the coast laughed a lot with them. Although, that funny moment didn't last for long, because it took us almost 2 hours to leave Quito because of the traffic. I nearly had 7 heart attacks because of our crazy driver. But a couple of hours later, we were in Ibarra, my home town for a small year! It's a quite big city, I expected it to be smaller. Everybody was so nervous to meet their families. Finally, I met mine. My host mother is really nice! My hostfather Manuel and two older hostsisters Celene and Priscilla and the dog Hercules are also nice! I hope they like me. Our house is quite different then a Belgian house. It's quite small and old, but for me it's really ok. We didn't do a lot that day, I tried to put all my clothes in the closet and had a rest. We also ate rice two times, for lunch and dinner. Close to our house, there's a very nice and big park. My bed is a little bit too small but I slept good the first night. Yesterday and today we went to Quito, to the appartment of my host sister Priscilla who studies there. I actually expected to do a 'citytrip' but all we did was eating and watching TV, so the highlights of Quito will be for another time. The communication with my family here isn't easy but I have my dictionarry with me every second of the day and my Spanish is getting better every minute.
So that's about it. It's a very nice country and I'm trying to adapt to everything here. For the moment, I'm typing this blogpost on my iPod, and please, don't search for language mistakes. At this point, I'm thinking and speaking only in English and Spanish, so crazy things are going on in my brain. Everything is said, no Dutch part for today. If you still want to ask something, just shoot!!

Adios Amigos
You still remember last time, when I said I was 23 days away of my exchange to Ecuador? Well, now it's still 4 days. This is my last blogpost in Belgium! And oh, I'm totally ready for my departure. On Wednesday (the 20th), I'll meet Jana and Noë (my fellow YFU-friends that go to Ecuador) in the airport at 6.45a.m., then we have a flight at 8.15 to Amsterdam and at 10.05 we have our flight to Quito, where we will arrive at 14.45 (21.45 in Belgium).
Today I started packing. Luckily I can bring 2 pieces of luggage, cause when I collected all the clothes and stuff, I almost got a heart attack of how much it was. So, all the paper work is done, I'm almost packed and the next days are all reserved for seeing my friends and family but after that, it's just me and my big adventure. As I already said, I'm 100% ready.
'It's not goodbye but see you later'
Adios Amigos!!

The Ecuadorian Dream
In 23 days, 15 hours and 32 minutes, I will now be at Brussels Airport. How excited I'm going to be at that moment on a scale from 1 to 10? Let's say 20! Because, together with Jana and Noë, we will fly to Quito, the capital of Ecuador.
Indeed, Ecuador! A few months ago, my parents gave me the brilliant opportunity to go on an exchange, so I decided to go to Ecuador with YFU, for one year. I will stay in Ibarra, a small city in the mountains with about 110 000 inhabitants. This city is located a bit north of Quito and the distance between Ibarra and the equator is just 50 km. I am looking forward to meet my host family (mother Geomara, father Manuel, my two older sisters Pricilla and Celene and of course the dog: Hercule). A very big thank you to them for being my family for one year!
To the readers of this blog: welcome, I hope you will like my blog. I'll try to write something every few weeks, sometimes in English, sometimes in Dutch.
Beste lezers, vrienden, familie,...
